The process to commission a statement piece.

1. Choose the kind of piece you want. (What is its function?)

Coffee table (size) (storage)

Dining table (size) (extendable?)

Console table (size)(Storage)

End table (size)(storage)

Hallway/entryway table (size)(storage)

Conference table (size)

Sofa Table (size)

Nightstand (size)

Desk (size)(storage)

Bookcase (size)

Headboard(size) (bed size and height of headboard)

Footboard (size) bed size and height above the mattress)

Bench (size)

2. Choose the color of the piece. Note: both wood color and wood grain affect the overall color. The most accurate color is the wood’s natural color, so light, medium, dark color wood is important for the best outcome.

3. Once the kind of piece is selected and the appropriate wood is chosen, a deposit is required. In most cases the deposit is 50% of the overall piece cost.

4. Then I work with vendors all over the United States to find wood slabs appropriate for your vision. We’ll send you photos of the best pieces for your approval. In cases where dimensional lumber is used, I take care to select wood with the correct overall look to achieve your vision.

5. Once the wood is chosen and in hand, I begin the process of building the piece you commissioned. Bark inclusions are cleaned and sealed, live edges have the bark removed and any soft wood that would impact both the look and structure of the piece are removed and the edges sealed. In cases where epoxy resin is involved the preparation for molding is integral. In addition, milling and trimming the wood to the correct size is completed.

6. For “live edge” pieces without resin, the construction goes on from that point. In cases where epoxy resin is being used, a mold is built to house the entire piece and sealed to prevent leaks.

7. At this stage you will receive a photo of the layout of the piece to confirm you like the look and everything is as it should be.

8. Once the mold is built, the wood slabs are set inside and anchored in place and the first resin pour is conducted. All resin pieces are typically done in 2 pours. The first pour is to seal and secure the piece into the mold as well as seal any missed leaks. This is called a light pour and will be removed in the milling process.

9. Once the light pour has cured for 24 hours the second pour is completed. This pour fills in all the voids, cracks and bark inclusions to create a solid piece. This step also ensures the entire piece has a uniform color matching the color chosen for the resin.

10. Once the resin is cured for 72 hours the piece is removed from the mold and milling can begin. This stage removes any extra resin and brings the wood back to the surface leaving only the voids and cracks filled with color.

11. The next stage is sanding and finishing. The sanding stage makes the piece smooth and prepares the surface for any finish that is applied. This is a multi-step process and, in some cases, sanding reveals defects in the surface that need to be addressed prior to completion.

12. Once all sanding is complete, the finish is applied. The finish applied is usually natural or clear in color. On some occasions the finish applied is pigmented or tinted to give various hues of different colors. We have a large selection of colors to choose from and multiple ways to vary the color intensity. Every color can be altered to lighten or darken the intensity of that color. We will work with you during the planning stage to determine what best suits your vision.

13. Once the finish has cured and is hardened. The legs of your choice will be mounted, and a crate will be custom built for shipping your piece in the most secure way possible. Legs are usually removed for shipping and moving ease.

14. Shipping is done by a freight company and will arrive via semi-truck and removed via pallet jack. The most basic delivery is curbside, but white glove service and assembly is available in most cases, but not all. There is an extra cost for this service and may be best managed by you although we will be happy to help.

15. That’s it! The process is complete! You have received the beautiful piece you have commissioned!
